The London artist Austin Osman Spare (1886–1956) developed, in The Book of Pleasure (1913), a method of turning a desire into an abstract sigil, charging it in a state of "vacuity" and then forgetting it, so that the desire could work beneath conscious awareness. Chaos magicians took this method and made it the signature technique of the movement. Sigil Craft teaches it.
A classic chaos exercise is to adopt a worldview for a fixed period: a month as a devout Neoplatonist, a month working with a pantheon, even a month treating a fictional universe as real. You learn how belief shapes perception and which tools each system offers.
