The Magic Squares of the Planets

The seven planetary squares from Agrippa — how each is built, why every line adds to the same number, and how to use them in a working.

A magic square is a grid of numbers in which every row, every column and both main diagonals add up to the same total: the magic constant. Agrippa gave each of the seven planets its own square, sized by the number of the planet in the Chaldean order, and built so that its magic constant reflects the planet's character. The squares were used as talismans, as aids to meditation and, in the Golden Dawn, as the basis of the planetary seals in the Sigil Maker.
