Consecrating Your Tools

How ceremonial magicians prepare a wand, sword, cup or pentacle for sacred use — and why the preparation matters more than the object.

In the ceremonial tradition, a magical tool is not a prop. It is an object that has been set apart for sacred work. Consecration is the process of setting it apart. The idea is old: the holy anointing oil in Exodus was prepared for a sacred purpose and kept from ordinary use. The Key of Solomon, one of the most influential grimoires, gives detailed instructions for consecrating the instruments of a magician, and the Golden Dawn later adapted them for the four elemental tools.
