THE INNER ARTS · LESSON 8 OF 8 · 16 MIN

Sound, Silence and Trance

Why magicians drum, chant, ring and hum — what sound does to attention, what is ancient and what is modern (the drum and the chant on one side, binaural beats and "Tibetan" bowls on the other), and how to sit with sound well.

Nearly every tradition in this curriculum makes a noise: the shaman's drum, the galdr chanted over the runes, the names vibrated in the Lesser Banishing Ritual, the beads counted under the breath, the bell that opens and closes a rite. Sound is the oldest tool for changing the state of the mind, and the one most hedged about with modern claims. This lesson sorts them.
