Hebrew has twenty-two letters, all consonants, written from right to left. In the Qabalah each letter is at once a sound, a number, a picture (its name is an ordinary word) and a path on the Tree of Life. Much of Western magic — divine names, sigils, gematria, the tarot trumps — is built on them.
