The Tree of Life has a dark side. In the Western tradition it is called the Tree of Death, the Night Side or the Qliphoth, and it is one of the most misunderstood ideas in the whole of Qabalah. It is not a second creation ruled by an enemy. In the version most useful for self-knowledge, it is something much closer to home: the Tree of Life seen from behind, where every quality has its shadow.
