Discernment & Protection

Every tradition that deals with spirits also teaches how to test them. "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God," says the First Letter of John, and Paul warns that "Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light." Whatever you believe spirits to be — independent beings, parts of your own mind, or something in between — the same skills keep you safe: discernment, boundaries and good sense.
