Write a servitor's design document as the chaos-magic lesson teaches, with one task, a form, rules, feeding, a lifespan and a dissolution phrase, checked against the lesson's cautions and drawn as a being of light in the shape and colour you choose, around its sigil. Launch it step by step: quiet gnosis with a breathing ring, or excited gnosis with a drum that quickens; its sigil drawing itself as you speak its name; a charge held at the peak; and a release as it flies. Then feed it, log honestly whether its task got done, see whether feeding makes any difference, and retire it deliberately. The golem, David-Néel's phantom monk, Dion Fortune's wolf and the egregore are set beside the design, where their warnings apply. The design document is drawn as a page of parchment, with its sigil as a seal, to save and print.
A servitor is a deliberately made thought-form with one job. On the spirit model it is a small being; on the psychological model it is an automated intention, a habit with a face. Either way, write the design document first, as the lesson teaches. Your draft is kept in this browser as you write.
Its shape
Its light
It ends
Alexandra David-Néel said her phantom monk took six months to dissolve. An end agreed at the start is easier.
The design document
The lesson asks for the design in writing before anything is launched, and a week's pause to revise it. Here it is as a page to print and keep with the sigil.
MAKERS BEFORE YOU
Chaos magic
from the late 1970s
Servitors as tools: designed, charged, used, and ended.
Peter J. Carroll's Liber Null (1978) and the writers who followed, Phil Hine among them in Condensed Chaos (1995), treat a servitor as a made thing with a task, which can be explained as a spirit or as a part of the mind.
The design document, the charge at the peak of gnosis and the planned end all come from this practice.

CAUTIONS
One task, one servitor. Never make one to act on another person without their consent. If you are prone to intrusive thoughts, or the practice distresses you, use simple sigils instead. If it seems to act outside its task, or you feel uneasy, dissolve it.
PRACTISE WITH IT

A few things to do with this tool, from a first try to a habit. Each one you tick counts as practice for the day, towards your streak and milestones.
