The Tarot de Marseille
a pattern fixed in the 17th and 18th centuries, from Italian decks of the 15th
The older pattern, in which the small cards carry no pictures.
- The numbered suit cards show only their symbols, laid out as on playing cards, so a Seven of Cups is read from seven cups and their arrangement, not from a scene.
- Justice is VIII and Strength (Force) is XI.
- The court cards are King, Queen, Knight (Cavalier) and Knave (Valet).
- Readers of this tradition often work from the number and suit and the positions of the symbols on the card.
WHERE IT DIFFERS In the Rider–Waite–Smith deck every card has a scene, and Strength and Justice swap their numbers.
